AI Tools for Founders: Comparing the Best Code Editors and App Builders
How AI Code Copilots Are Redefining App Building
Everywhere you look, AI code editors and Copilots are making waves—promising to revolutionise how we build apps.
Some are very good, helping founders prototype in mere minutes. Others? Well, not so much.
The good news?
Building an app no longer requires a massive dev team or years of coding experience.
In this newsletter, I will explore how AI-powered Copilots are empowering founders and solo builders to turn ideas into reality faster, cheaper, and with less stress.
Here’s what’s inside:
A beginner’s guide to AI-powered low-code and no-code editors.
The must-have features to look for in these tools.
How to choose the right Copilot for your projects.
Let’s dive into the future of app-building magic!
What are AI powered building Tools?
AI-powered building tools are software products that leverage AI to simplify, automate, and accelerate various stages of the software development lifecycle.
These tools are designed for developers, founders, and non-technical users to create, manage, or enhance digital products with speed and fraction of cost.
There are two types of AI building tools
1. AI Code Editors
AI code editors assist with coding tasks by offering features like intelligent code suggestions, debugging, and auto-completion.
They streamline the coding process, making developers more productive.
Examples:
GitHub Copilot
Cursor
Zed
Windsurf
Use Case: Writing optimised, error-free code faster.
2. AI Full Stack Generators
These tools create full functional apps using simple english commands, from the front end to the back end, often requiring little to no coding.
Examples:
Bolt.new
Replit
V0
Use Case: Rapid prototyping or creating a minimum viable product (MVP) quickly and affordably.
Features of Main Tools & Why you should use them?
V0:
Meet V0—your ChatGPT-like companion for building functional apps at lightning speed. With its intuitive, chat-based interface, you can create fully working applications with just a few simple prompts.
I rely on V0 daily to bring new feature ideas to life and build functionality from scratch.
It’s particularly strong at crafting front-end apps, thanks to its integration with shadcn—a framework-agnostic component design library.
This ensures you consistently achieve polished, professional-looking UIs without extensive design expertise.
Here’s a real-world example:
I used V0 to build a feature for Thriftify using nothing more than chat prompts. The process was so seamless that it eliminated the need for a separate UX/UI prototyping phase and allowed the feature to be integrated into the product in under an hour.
Build and Iterate on Product ideas in minutes
Bolt:
Bolt is another tool similar to V0 with one click deploy your application feature.
Bolt is very useful when prototype an idea, build MVPs, or launch multiple projects in a short span.
Bolt provides a streamlined way to translate your specs—crafted with tools like GPT or Claude—into functional code.
The results are impressive, and the team behind Bolt consistently delivers updates and improvements, keeping the tool fresh and responsive to user needs.
Create apps effortlessly using simple, natural chat commands
Bolt offers support for frameworks like React.js Next.js, Vue, and Nuxt. However, I’ve recently encountered issues with Next.js, and it seems others have faced challenges as well, particularly when building more complex applications with Bolt.
For founders, Bolt is still an excellent way to jumpstart projects without getting bogged down in the technical details.
Engineers, on the other hand, will appreciate its ability to handle greenfield projects with ease, although integrating Bolt into an existing codebase may pose some challenges since it’s primarily a code generator.
Bolt simplicity and speed are perfect for creating demos or spinning up multiple apps quickly.
The tool includes useful features like "Lock" and "Target File," which help guide the code generation process, but seasoned developers might find they need more granular control for complex or long-term projects.
Overall, Bolt is a great asset for founders aiming to accelerate development and engineers seeking to simplify repetitive tasks.goals.
Cursor:
Unlike browser-based-all-in-one app builder tool, Cursor is designed as a full-fledged integrated development environment (IDE) with AI-driven coding assistance. It focuses on enhancing developer productivity by integrating code suggestions, debugging help, and contextual AI support directly into the IDE.
Cursor was initially launched as a Coding Copilot tool for engineers working on existing codebases or building complex applications. However, it has quickly evolved as a full app builder tool with simple english instructions.
Cursor isn’t just a coding assistant anymore—it can also build fully functional apps with simple commands.
Take a look at the example below: I provided a straightforward chat instruction, and Cursor generated a Chrome extension similar to Momentum.
To try it yourself, open the AI chat window by pressing Shift-Command-I (Mac) or Shift-Control-I (PC). Once it’s open, enter your app instructions, like:
"Create a Chrome extension for a new Momentum tab."
Cursor handles the rest, turning your idea into a working app in no time! .
Summary
Use Bolt or V0 if you’re a founder or developer prioritising speed and simplicity to quickly generate apps or features.
Use Cursor IDE if you want to build complex apps and have a little know how of how to deploy them.
See you until next post
